For the first time restorers worked on 86 of the carefully preserved plaster casts. Victims have been entombed in ash and now plaster for 1,900 years. Restored casts show harrowing agony of catastrophic death. The future interweaves with the past to give a new life to the tragedy of Pompeii. And the Villa dei Misteri (Villa of Mysteries), an estate on the outskirts of Pompeii’s city centre that features some of the best-preserved frescoes of the site, is now open to the public after one of many restoration projects ordered by the EU.
